TMEA music events and meetings scheduled from March 16th through 29th are to be suspended.
Decisions on the impact of COVID-19 on all future TMEA events and competitions will be communicated as they become available.

This 112-member All-State choir is for students in 1A–4A schools. The following is information about and guidelines for this organization:

Entering Students to an All-State Path Audition

Directors from 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A schools have the option to enter their students in the audition process in either the Large School Choir (LSC) or Small School Choir (SSC) track. When students are entered online in the TMEA audition entry program, the director will select each student’s audition track (LSC or SSC) and their voice part (S1, S2, A1, A2, T1, T2, B1, B2). This decision will be made on a student-by-student basis, and each student will be able to audition in only one track. Directors are not required to designate a single track for all students in their school.

Students may have already experienced success in the LSC, and thus they may want to enter the LSC track again. Conversely, 1A-4A students who have never auditioned for All-State (or auditioned and did not experience success) might choose to audition via the SSC track. Again, this is a student-specific decision and each student can audition via only one audition track.

Region entry fees are determined by each Region, as published in the respective Region audition policies and procedures.

Repertoire for Auditions

Each All-State packet will have two designations: (1) LSC or SSC, and (2) SSAA or TTBB.

It is the responsibility of each Region to decide what will be included in the LSC and SSC audition track. All pieces designated for LSC auditions must be must be auditioned or performed prior to the final round in January (exception: those designated as Area pieces could be reserved for the final round). This audition/performance requirement also applies to SSC Area pieces. Regions may elect to perform a combination of LSC and SSC Area pieces as a part of their Region Clinic and Concert.

EERC has produced separate LSC and SSC All-State repertoire tracks for purchase.

Audition Paths

All students will audition in their respective voice parts. The scores of students in the LSC track may be ranked against other SSC candidates in their voice part. The scores of students in the SSC track will be ranked against other SSC candidates in their voice part. At the conclusion of the audition, there will be two separate results:

  • LSC track students will advance to the next round of auditions in the same manner that was previously in place in their Region (Region or Pre-Area).
  • The SSC process should contain three rounds for all students:
    • At either the First or Second audition, a region may choose to select their SSC Area candidates. In either case, the second round is intended to be a Pre-Area Round for SSC and should emulate the Area audition format and include sightreading.
    • Each Region may certify as many as four candidates on each of the 8 voice parts for the SSC Area Audition, which is the third round.
Region Choir

Each Region will designate how many chairs in the Region Choir will be available for LSC students and SSC students. This will be a Region-specific decision based on the needs of that particular Region. A Region Choir will consist of the designated number of LSC students in each voice part plus the designated number of SSC students in each voice part.

Goal: To not eliminate any LSC student from the Region Choir by adding SSC students.

For example:
If your Region Choir has had 20 Soprano 1s, 20 Soprano 2s, etc., and the Region doesn’t want to add more chairs, your Region would need to designate 16 or 17 chairs for LSC-track students and 3 or 4 chairs for SSC-track students. If your Region Choir has had 20 Soprano 1s, 20 Soprano 2s, etc., and the Region doesn’t mind adding more chairs, the Region could designate 20 chairs for LSC-track students and add 3 or 4 chairs for SSC-track students. Each of these scenarios is dependent on the specific numbers in the Region auditions, LSC vs. SSC participation, etc.

Regions with higher SSC participation will likely have more chairs in the Region Choir designated for SSC students—again, this will be a Region-specific decision.

For Regions with no 1A–4A schools, there will be no change in the way these Regions have been operating.

Area Audition

At the SSC Area audition, all Soprano 1s and Soprano 2s will combine to audition as one voice part—Soprano. The same will apply to Altos, Tenors, and Basses. Students who are selected as Area Candidates will audition on the 3 selected SSC Area pieces and will also have a sightreading audition.

Area alignment will follow the current 8-Area format based on student participation in their Region’s All-State process for the previous two years and shall be reviewed biannually based on Region/Area participation.

Area auditions will result in the following voice part places based on the weighted 8-Area alignment percentages formula:

SSC Track for 2016-2017 (The number of students selected to All-State SSC from each Area will be determined by apportionment of participation in 2015-2016 and will be reviewed for 2016-2018 by the TMEA Executive Board.)

2016–2018 Apportionment

Each Area, in consultation with the State Vocal Chair, will decide which audition option works best for their audition.

LCS and SSC Area auditions will take place on the same day and at the same site as currently set by TMEA.

After results are announced at the Area Audition, LSC and SSC All-State candidates will have the required meeting in which they receive their packets (supplemental music and information for the TMEA Convention).

The Area fee of $20 will remain the same.

Alternate Policy

TMEA Alternate Policy: An alternate may not represent a vacancy from a Region different than his/her own.

Exception: SSC Auditions – Each Region may certify a total of 4 students per eight voice parts. No alternates from Region to Area will be designated or utilized in the SSC process.
